Welcome to our Autumn 2019 Newsletter where we will give round-up of MGIP activities at Frankfurt Book Fair and announce the location of our 2020 summer meeting.
Frankfurt Book Fair Dinner
Our traditional Frankfurt Dinner took place on 15th October before the Book Fair kicked off the next day and it was a great success. Many members and guest remarked that this was the best dinner ever, with more participants than ever staying until the end and longer.

MGIP President, Chris Hudson, gave a speech for all attending guests, remarking on the robust attendance from all corners of the globe. He welcomed the illustrious guests and authors in attendance – from PEN International, from Tibet, and from Cambridge, and thanked our Greek members for the wonderful location of this year’s summer meeting. He also discussed how, following detailed member feedback, planning is underway for the 2020 summer meeting (more to be revealed in this newsletter!). He also recognised the generous funding from the Kapoor family for next year’s book award. The Best Book of the MGIP Book Award will be named the ‘Kiran & Pramod Book Award’. He offered good wishes to members Kiran Kapoor and Ken Webb who were unable to attend the dinner for health reasons.
Chris then spoke about changes in the membership (more young members from varied backgrounds, reflecting the changing nature of serious publishing in the cultural arena) and in the composition of the Board (with 2 new female Board members and the first ever Madame Chairman).
He noted the new energy evident from younger members and Board members, but urged additional membership applications. He paid tribute to the financial management of the Treasurer, Juraj Heger, and the administrative work of Secretary, Barbara Glauning. He drew attention, during this time of change, to the continued involvement and support of Jan Martens who was a founding member and Elisabeth Sandmann, the past president and applauded the continuity that they bring to the group.
Finally he re-emphasized the ongoing importance – now more than ever – of the group’s founding principles, with regard especially to the promotion of international co-operation and exchange on both the cultural and economic plans in the field of publishing, and our upholding of freedom of speech and freedom of information.

MGIP Book Awards
As usual the diplomas for the MGIP Book Awards were handed out during the Frankfurt dinner, this time by Norbert Küpper, one of the members of the jury. 15 award winners were able to attend, so Norbert could congratulate them in person.
The ‘Best Book of all Best Books’ was The King of Afganistan by Lannoo Uitgevers, Belgium. Many congratulations to them.
LANNOO proudly displayed their Diplomas their stand at the fair, including their silver award for ‘Best Lifestyle Book’.

Announcement – Summer Meeting 2020
We welcome all MGIP members and their guests to join us in Montengero for what shall be a rememberable weekend, so please save the date – 26th to 29th June 2020.
We work hard to make sure that every venue for the summer meetings is special and adventurous. Montenegro seems to be such a place, and it even has a connection to the Motovun Group – our founder, Bato Tomasevic, was Montenegrinean.
A snapshot of Montenegro …
Montenegro is a country in Southeast Europe on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, and Kosovo to the east, Albania to the south, and Croatia to the west.
The capital city is Podgorica, whilst Celje is designated as the Old Royal Capital. Montenegro is a Member of NATO and a candidate country for EU membership.
Montenegro is endowed with many natural wonders – with mountains, a picturesque coast at the Adriatic Sea and some impressive fresh-water lakes. It welcomes visitors with an unparalleled spirit of hospitality. National Geographic Traveler says that Montenegro is one of ’50 Places of a Lifetime’. The coast region of Montenegro is considered one of the great new “discoveries” among world tourists. Montenegro was also listed in ’10 Top Hot Spots of 2019′ to visit, describing it as ‘Currently ranked as the second fastest growing tourism market in the world (falling just behind China)’. It is listed every year by prestigious tourism guides like Lonely Planet as top touristic destination along with Greece, Spain and other world touristic places.
We are very excited to experience this wonderful country with our members.
We will stay at Hotel SPLENDID in Budva. One of the most traditional hotels at the coast, still not overtaken by a foreign company. The conference facilities meet our needs, the rooms are newly decorated and the beach is fantastic.

We are pleased to announce that the traditional MGIP London Dinner will take place on 9th March 2020.
Please join us at a new venue The Ironmongers’ Hall (www.ironmongers.org/) which is situated in London, next to the Barbican and St. John’s Station.
Invitations and further information will follow at the beginning of next year.
